En el libreto de "57th & 9th", Sting nos ilustra a propósito de "Pretty young soldier", diciéndonos que el travestismo es un tema muy popular en las canciones folclóricas británicas de los siglos XVIII y XIX. "Sovay sovay" o "Canadee io" son tan solo dos ejemplos de ello. Las historias son muy similares, mujeres que se disfrazan de soldado o marinero para reencontrarse con su amor ausente por ser reclutado para alguna gran guerra, y el resultado de toda esta confusión cuando el ardid es descubierto. Sting hace su personal aportación a este tipo de cancioncillas populares, aunque en su caso el embrollo es aún mayor cuando el Capitán de la Armada tiene la sinceridad de reconocer su innegable atracción por el joven y hermoso soldado.
Esta breve canción de inspiración clásica cuenta con una muy hermosa melodía, se ha convertido en un tema imprescindible en este tour, y espero que así siga siendo. Curiosamente "Pretty young soldier" nació en un estudio de grabación cercano a la "Cocina del Infierno" de Nueva York, y surgió de la colaboración de Sting con los guitarristas Dominic Miller y Lyle Workman y el batería Josh Freese.
