COMENTARIO:

Para celebrar el lanzamiento de una nueva emisora de radio, la iHeart, se organizó el concierto más largo de la historia de la radio, celebrado en dos días y presentado por Ryan Seacrest. El plantel de estrellas era tan abrumador que las 25.000 entradas disponibles para las dos fechas se agotaron en apenas 10 minutos. En la primera jornada se dieron cita Black Eyed Peas, Kelly Clarkson, Bruno Mars, Carrie Underwood, Joe Jonas, Karmin, Jane’s Addiction, Coldplay, Usher, Alicia Keys y Jay Z. El segundo y último día del evento empezó con un escenario repleto de leyendas, Steven Tyler interpretando el “Sweet emotion” de sus Aerosmith acompañado por Jeff Beck a la guitarra y Sting al bajo. Muchas horas más tarde Sting volvería a aparecer en escena en la actuación más larga y esperada de la noche, la de una Lady Gaga tan excesiva como de costumbre. Cubierta de sangre y encaramada a una moto Harley Davidson donde tenía fijado su teclado cantó con Sting el clásico “Stand by me” (que ya interpretaron juntos en el pasado concierto Rainforest) y una épica y muy renovada “King of pain”, sin duda uno de los momentos más álgidos de toda la velada.

COMENTARIO:

Se trataba de la séptima edición de unos premios humanitarios instaurados por el ex-presidente americano Bill Clinton a través de su fundación benéfica y que en esta ocasión recayeron, entre otros, en Sting y su mujer Trudie por su larga labor ecológica en la lucha contra la deforestación del Amazonas y por la protección de las tribus que allí habitan. El matrimonio recibió el premio de manos del actor Morgan Freeman, más tarde para amenizar la cena actuaron el cantante de Somalia K’Naan y el propio Sting (al que se encargo de introducir Barbra Streisand quien confesó querer al cantante para su próximo disco de duetos) quien con su banda y una pequeña sección de cuerda hizó una mini actuación en la línea de “Symphonicity”, que contó además con un invitado de lujo, el trompetista Chris Botti.

COMENTARIO:

El programa “CMT: Crossroads” llevaba cinco años sin emitirse después de haber hecho posible reuniones de músicos de country con estrellas pop tan destacables como las de Faith Hill con Pretenders, Keith Urban con John Mayer, Taylor Swift con Deft Leppard, Emmylou Harris con Dave Matthews, Sugarland con Bon Jovi, Dixie Chicks con James Taylor, Willie Nelson con Sheryl Crow, Ryan Adams con Elton John, Lucinda Williams con Elvis Costello, o Alison Krauss con Robert Plant, que llegarían a grabar juntos todo un álbum juntos que recibió excelentes críticas y numerosos premios.

Esta nueva edicción del popular programa se estrena con la unión de Vince Gill con Sting, ambos con proyectos inminentes a punto de aparecer y con unas carreras intachables, abaladas por 36 Grammys (20 de Gill, 16 de Sting) y por unas ventas globales por encima de los 125 millones álbumes (100 de Sting, 25 de Gill). No era la primera vez que coincidían en la ceremonia de los Grammy de 2004 hicieron un tributo a los Beatles junto a Dave Matthews y Pharrel Williams. El programa, que se emitiría el 25 de noviembre, contó con nueve canciones, 4 de Vince Gill, 4 de Sting, y un cover, el “Let it be me” de los Everly Brothers” que en realidad fue el único en el que cantaron a dúo, en el resto se acompañaban tan solo instrumentalmente.

COMENTARIO:

Estos recitales se sumaron a los múltiples eventos que por estos días tuvieron lugar con motivo del décimo aniversario de los atentados del 11S. En esta ocasión el homenajeado era Herman Sandler, banquero, filántropo y colaborador asiduo de la Fundación Rainforest, que pereció en las Torres Gemelas a los 57 años. La gala cargada de emotividad tuvo como introductora a Christy Ferer, que también perdió a su marido aquel fatídico día, y contó con la actuación del prestigioso y longevo Ensemble Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio con la colaboración especial de Sting, que se encargaba de poner voz a la nueva composición que para este motivo había escrito Stanley Silverman y que esta noche se estrenaba. El Trio, que desde que tocaran en la investidura de Jimmy Carter ya no se han separado, acompañó también a Sting en una delicada versión de “Fragile”. La letra de “Piano Trio Nº. 2” estaba tomada de la obra de Shakespeare “Cimbelino” (1610) – Acto IV, Escena 2 – en la cual se meditaba sobre la mortalidad y la inmortalidad. En el evento que se abrió con un Trio de Mozart y se cerró con uno de Beethoven se dejaron ver caras tan conocidas como las de Alan Alda o Paul Simon. La nota divertida la puso el propio Sting cuando comentó al público que el ya tenía mucha experiencia en trios musicales, refiriéndose como es lógico a su etapa con The Police.

...Y NUEVA GIRA

Los que albergaban alguna esperanza de que Sting fuera a meterse a un estudio a grabar material nuevo van a tener que esperar aún bastante porque el cantante acaba de anunciar una nuevo tour (de momento americano) que servirá para promocionar su caja recopilatoria "25 years" y en la que repescará viejos temas no tocados en muchos años de su carrera como solista y como parte de Police. La "Back to Bass Tour" de momento ha anunciado 30 fechas en Estados Unidos y Canadá (en teatros de pequeña capacidad), pero es más que probable que le mantenga como poco otro año ocupado. Los músicos acompañantes en esta ocasión serán: Dominic Miller (Guitarra), Rufus Miller (su hijo mayor, también a la guitarra), Peter Tickell (hermano de Kathryn, al violín eléctrico), Vinnie Colaiuta (Batería) y Jo Lawry (Coros). Es sorprendente la ausencia de un teclista (todos esperabamos que fuese el gran David Sancious). El nuevo disco de Sting, siendo optimistas, llegará 10 años después de "Sacred love". Sting y el dramaturgo americano Brian Yorkey - ganador del Tony y el Pulitzer por el musical "Next to normal" - se encuentran dando los últimos retoques a un proyecto común, "The last ship", un musical inspirado en el álbum más autobiográfico y confesional de Sting, "The soul cages" (1991), con vistas a un posible estreno el próximo mes de octubre.  

La obra cuenta con un libreto escrito integramente por Yorkey en el que se intercalan las canciones de Sting - al parecer tiene entre 20 y 24 canciones preparadas, algunas de ellas antiguos temas convenientemente actualizados - que se ambienta en la ciudad natal de Sting, Newcastle.

Los protagonistas de la obra son Gideon (un joven de 30 años tan carismático como impulsivo), su hermano Michael (un sacerdote), su ex-novia Meg (decidica e insensible), Arthur Cook (el marido de Meg, un magnate que hizo fortuna trabajando en los astilleros) y el Padre O'Brien (el alma espiritual para los trabajadores que trabajan como esclavos en los astilleros).

Sting debuta de este modo como compositor de un musical poco después de que Bono & The Edge hayan dejado totalmente indeferentes a sus propios fans con la música para la obra "Spider-man: Turn off the dark". En octubre también verá la luz "Ocean's kingdom", un ballet escrito por Paul McCartney que supone su quinta incursión en la música clásica.

COMENTARIO:

Aunque no se publicitó en la página oficial rápidamente corrieron las noticias de que Sting y su banda había ofrecido un concierto privado en Maui (la tercera isla más poblada de Hawaii) para los empleados de la empresa de software informático Oracle. Mucha gente de los hoteles colindantes rodearon las vallas para presenciar desde la distancia una actuación cuyo sonido se oía perfectamente hasta en la playa de Wailea.

El repertorio fue exactamente el mismo que en el anterior concierto en la República Dominicana salvo que se añadió “If you love somebody set them free” a cambio de prescindir de “Fragile” como cierre final, en esta ocasión fue la mítica “Every breath you take” quien tuvo ese honor.

LA HISTORIA DE...

THE PIRATE'S BRIDE

Cara B del single “I was brought to my senses”, se trata de una emotiva balada perteneciente a las sesiones de grabación del álbum “Mercury falling”, que inexplicablemente no llegó a formar parte de él a pesar de su indudable calidad. De esas sesiones también quedaron fuera temas como “Lullaby to an anxious child”, “Beneath a desert moon” o “Giacomo´s blues”, que irían paulatinamente viendo la luz a través de los 4 singles que se extrajeron del álbum.

“The pirate’s bride” es una canción romántica (con una magistral melodía de piano a cargo de Kenny Kirkland) que curiosamente se enmarca en el siglo XVII en la época del dominio español en el Nuevo Mundo (América). El protagonista es uno de los muchos piratas que proliferaron para tomar su parte del botín de todo el oro que los españoles se llevaban por la Ruta de las Indias. El problema fue tal que el Rey Felipe II ordenó que cada barco fuera escoltado por poderosos galeones. Barbanegra, el Olonés, el Capitán Kidd o Henry Morgan fueron algunos de los más famosos piratas y bucaneros. Después del desastre de la Armada Invencible los piratas del mar Caribe buscarían se buscarían otras rutas distintas de asalto. El gusto de Sting por los piratas se reforzó cuando en 2006 grabó dos canciones para el álbum “Rogue’s gallery” (también colaboraron Nick Cave, Bryan Ferry, Lou Reed o Bono), que apoyaba el lanzamiento de “Piratas del Caribe: El cofre del hombre muerto”.

Sting hizo justicia recuperando un tema que mereció mucha más suerte y lo grabó en Nueva York (con la New York Chamber Consort) para el álbum “Symphonicities”. Esta versión ofrecía una gran oportunidad de lucimiento a la vocalista australiana Jo Lawry que cantó a dúo el tema con Sting. Después de ser arreglada y ensayada para la ocasión, finalmente nunca se estrenó dentro de la gira “Symphonicity”, por lo que “The pirate’s bride” nunca ha sido tocada en vivo por Sting.

Para los amantes de las rarezas en la edicción japonesa del álbum se incluyeron tres temas extra, “Straight to my heart” (de las sesiones londinenses), “Why should I cry for you?” (con el prólogo de “Island of souls” al igual que se tocó en directo) y “Whenever I say your name” (de nuevo cantada a medias con Jo Lawry). La caja “25 years”, probablemente, aporte un nuevo tema sinfónico nunca estrenado a lo largo de la gira, “Never coming home”.

Segunda visita de Sting a la República Dominicana, ya tocó allí en abril de 2006 dentró de su gira “Broken music” en el mismo recinto. Llego a mediodía y se mostró menos reservado con la prensa de lo que acostumbra, para estupefacción de los periodistas dijo no saber quien era Juan Luis Guerra, que fue su invitado especial en los bises finales hace 5 años y que también había participado en el Festival de Jazz de Curaçao. El set fue algo más extenso que allí, se añadieron los temas “When we dance”, “Shape of my heart” y “Fragile”, que cerró ante un rendido auditorio llenó hasta la bandera.

Segunda edicción de este festival celebrado en la Isla de Curazao, un país independiente de los Paises Bajos que se encuentra situado en las Antillas Holandesas. Surgió como una variante del popular Festival de Jazz que desde 1976 se celebra en Rotterdam. Sting era el encargado de cerrar el primer día del festival, al día siguiente Juan Luis Guerra y Stevie Wonder serían los platos fuertes. La actución de Sting comenzó a medianoche y fue bastante más breve de lo esperado (tan sólo se tocaron 14 temas de los 20 que suele interpretar), pero contaba con una sorpresa muy especial, la presencia del saxofonista Branford Marsalis que tocó en 3 de los temas, algo que era más que previsible teniendo en cuenta que el cuarteto de jazz de Branford estaba convocado en el mismo festival y había actuado esa misma tarde, aunque en un escenario más pequeño. Dos días después Sting y la misma banda de acompañamiento tocarían en la República Dominicana.

CELEBRANDO EL 60 CUMPLEAÑOS DE STING

Para celebrar el 60 cumpleaños de Sting, y de paso promocionar su nueva caja recopilatoria "25 years", se ha organizado un concierto muy especial en el Teatro Beacon de Nueva York el día 1 de octubre, que contará con la participación de invitados muy especiales: Bruce Springsteen, Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder, Mary J. Blige, Herbie Hancock, Robert Downey, Jr., Vince Gill, Will.I.am, Rufus Wainwright, Branford Marsalis, Billy Joel y Chris Botti. Lo bueno de todo el asunto es que la gala será benéfica y el dinero se destinará integramente a la Fundación Robin Hood, que establece programas de ayuda para los "sin techo".

También cabe destacar que la banda de acompañamiento de Sting es igualmente lujosa: Dominic Miller (Guitarra), Christian McBride (Bajo), David Sancious (Teclados), Vinnie Colaiuta (Batería), Jo Lawry, Lisa Fischer y Tabitha Fair (Coros).

Probablemente sea la mayor reunión de estrellas hecha para conmemorar las canciones de Sting desde que el 6 de febrero de 2004, en los estudios Sony Pictures de Los Ángeles, se le concediera el premio MusiCares a la personalidad del año. Bob Geldof fue el encargado de presentar al premiado y de entregarle su galardón; Dustin Hoffman leyó pasajes de la recién publicada autobiografía de Sting, "Broken music"; y numerosos cantes hicieron sus particulares versiones de los éxitos del ex-líder de Police:  Elvis Costello ("Every little thing she does is magic"), Wynonna ("If I ever lose my faith in you"), John Mayer ("It's probably me"), Mary J. Blige ("Roxanne"), The Black Eyed Peas ("Walking on the moon"), Dave Matthews ("The bed's too big without you"), Rufus Wainwright ("King of pain"), Elton John ("Mad about you"), Kylie Minogue ("Every breath you take") y Charles Aznavour, Herbie Hancock & Chris Botti ("Moon over Bourbon Street").

Ya que nunca se editó este MusiCares (al contrario que los de James Taylor, Joni Mitchell o Brian Wilson) bien merecía la pena haberlo incluido como material extra de "25 years". También puestos a soñar habría merecido la pena retrasar su lanzamiento para incluir el concierto de 60 cumpleaños de Sting en sustitución del inédito de la gira americana "Broken music", que a estas alturas ya nadie esperaba.
