COMENTARIO:

Este tour que siempre fue comparado con el que hicieron en su día Elton John y Billy Joel (el “Face to face Tour”, el más exitoso nunca realizado por un tándem de artistas que les mantuvo actuando de manera intermitente entre 1994 y 2009) ahora animaba a otros artistas a unir fuerzas en vivo: los siguientes ahora serían Eminem & Rihanna, Billy Cox & Bootsy Collins y Rod Stewart & Carlos Santana. Este fue el segundo concierto de los tres concretados en Canadá y fue un nuevo éxito de la pareja formada por Sting & Simon.

COMENTARIO:

Este año se cumplían 50 años de la publicación del primer álbum de Simon & Garfunkel “Wednesday morning, 3 AM” y 36 del primero de The Police “Outlandos d’amour”. En dos horas y cuarenta minutos ambos hicieron un recorrido por sus largas trayectorias, 16 temas de Simon, 14 temas de Sting y 1 versión de los Everly Brothers. Se juntaron para cantar hasta en 10 ocasiones, Sting cantó “America” de Simon y Simon “Fragile” de Sting. Un nuevo éxito para una pareja de cantantes que nunca habríamos imaginado que compartieran escenario.

COMENTARIO:

Después de un día apretado para Sting con el fin de promocionar su obra musical “The last ship” (que le llevó al Steppenwolf Theater a tocar y a conceder entrevistas al Chicago Tribune y al Chicago Sun Times) retomó la gira junto a Simon precisamente en Chicago y en el ecuador de la misma. Ya tan solo quedaban 11 de los 21 programados. Sting parecía encantado de compartir escenario con su “profesor y mentor” y defendía estupendamente bien temas como “America” o “Bridge over troubled water”.

COMENTARIO:

Un día antes de tocar con Paul Simon en Chicago, Sting aprovechó la jornada libre para ofrecer un concierto benéfico en el que charló con el elenco de actores que representará a partir de junio su musical. En el evento que duró algo más de una hora Sting también cantó hasta 8 canciones de “The last ship” con el acompañamiento de Rob Mathes, Jo Lawry y su viejo amigo Jimmy Nail, que además es uno de los actores principales de la obra que en otoño llegará a Broadway. Se pudieron escuchar canciones que como “It’s not the same moon” o “Show some respect” únicamente se habían tocado en los conciertos del Public Theater de Nueva York. También se respondieron a preguntas que fans formularon vía Twitter.

COMENTARIO:

El concierto de St. Paul de la gira Simon & Sting se vió ensombrecido por problemas técnicos que hicieron que Sting cortara en seco su actuación dejando a medias el tema “The hounds of winter”. Más tarde tocando “Roxanne” apenas era audible su voz y paracía que fuese el público quien cantaba acompañado por su banda. Sting estaba completamente abochornado. Afortunadamente al final no llegó la sangre al río pero era doloroso ver un espectáculo cuyas mejores entradas costaban más de 250 dólares en esas condiciones. Al día siguiente, aprovechando que no había actuación con Simon, Sting acudió al teatro donde se ensaya su musical para hablar con su equipo artístico y de paso para cantar alguno de los temas de “The last ship” acompañado por Rob Mathes.

El primer concierto canadiense de esta gira (los otros dos se celebrarían pocos días después en Montreal y Toronto). Simon dice que es un honor poder interpretar una gran canción, entonces comienza “Fragile” que ejecuta casi íntegramente en solitario con el acompañamiento de Sting a la guitarra y a los coros. Más tarde el ex-Police le devolverá el favor cantando una versión totalmente desnuda de “America”.

Simon dijó que tocar con Sting y su banda era una felíz combinación y ambos aparentaron tener mucho más en común de lo que a primera vista podría imaginarse. Sting dijo al respecto de “I hung my head” que siendo británico su sueño siempre fue escribir una canción coutry. El final lo puso el sentido homenaje al recientemente desaparecido Phil Everly, cuando cantaron el “When will I be loved” de los Everly Brothers quienes hicieron en su día (en 1986) unos maravillosas armonías vocales en el tema “Graceland” de Simon.

COMENTARIO:

Sting volvió a optar por “Walking on the moon” y el concierto por lo tanto conservó idéntico repertorio y orden que el de Anaheim. A medida que avanzan las fechas Sting y Simon aparecen más integrados y relajados. A pesar del éxito que está teniendo el tour resulta complicado pensar que pueda tener continuidad, desde que se anunciara la veintena de actuaciones apenas se han añadido nuevas fechas. Verles en Europa es aún más complicado por los planes de Simon de entrar a grabar un nuevo álbum y los preparativos de la obra musical de Sting, “The last ship”, de cara a su estreno en Broadway a finales de octubre.

Sting y Paul Simon provienen de dos continentes diferentes, tienen distintos acentos, han coquetedo con variados estilos musicales (Sting con el pop, rock, reggae o la música clásica; Paul por su parte con el folk, el reggae o la música étnica) y ambos han mostrado siempre curiosidad y ganas de experimentar, quizás por este motivo ambos se atrevieron a buscar algún tipo de conexión entre sus canciones que diera coherencia a un espectáculo de dos horas y cuarenta minutos que les tiene a ambos de protagonistas y que les hace cruzarse en el escenario continuamente y compartir duetos de lo más curiosos. En esta ocasión fue Sting quien alteró su repertorio introduciendo en el mismo otro clásico policiaco “Walking on the moon” en sustitución de “Love is the seventh wave” (un tema que había supuesto toda una sorpresa su inclusión ya que no lo había tocado en 27 años) que cantaba a dúo con Simon. Los duetos entre ambos se habían visto reducidos por tanto ahora a 10.

Cuarta fecha de la gira conjunta de Sting y Paul Simon o como éste último la definió, “su pequeño experimento” en el que comparten escenario y músicos durante buena parte del show (hasta 11 duetos llegaron a interpretar). Simon estrenó en el tour su conocida canción “Still crazy after all this years” dejando fuera el cover de Bo Diddley “Pretty thing”. A Sting por su parte se le empezó a ver más cómodo cantando “Bridge over troubled wáter” (un tema en el que Garfunkel se lucía a base de bien y se llevaba toda la gloria) y tomándose sus libertades. Era llamativo que el último trabajo de Sting, “The last ship”, no tuviera ninguna representación en el largo repertorio elegido, y el último de Simon, “So beautiful or so what”, sólo tuviera 1, “Dazzling blue”.

Nuevamente los cambios más reseñables venían por el hecho de que a Paul sí que le gusta mover canciones del set y probar otras nuevas. “Gumboots” y la recientemente incorporada “Zydeco” fueron las canciones desechadas para esta actuación, a favor de la estupenda “Graceland” y del cover de Bo Diddley “Pretty thing”. Más adelante Simon recuperaría “That was your mother” (celebrado tema del disco “Graceland”) dejando fuera el medley formado por “Kodachrome” (uno de sus mayores hits en solitario) y “Gone at last”.

Las novedades más destacadas de este concierto las introdujo Paul Simon ya que decidió modificar en este segundo concierto del tour alguna canción, y así “Gumboots” sustituyó a “Crazy love”. En el segundo set de Simon se cambió el orden de las canciones pero las canciones elegidas fueron las mismas. Sting cantó 5 temas de su etapa con The Police y versionó al propio Simon (“America”), Paul tan sólo tocó 2 de su periplo como “Simon & Garfunkel” y rindió tributo a Junior Parker (“Mystery train”) y a Chet Atkins (“Wheels”). Sting antes de interpretar “America” contó al público que ese tema le recordaba mucho a la primera vez que fue de gira con The Police a los Estados Unidos a finales de los 70. Probablemente el precio de las entradas (entre 65 y 300 dólares) evitó que ni este ni el anterior concierto agotará todo el papel disponible.

COMENTARIO:

Sting hizo en el verano de 2004 una gira conjunta con la cantante británica Annie Lennox, cada uno realizaba su propio set y únicamente se juntaban en el escenario para cantar un tema, “We’ll be together”. El planteamiento que presenta esta gira con Paul Simon es muy distinto, ninguno pretende ser el telonero del otro y actúan en igualdad de condiciones (a pesar de que la idea del tour fuera de Simon o incluso reconociendo Sting que Simon es uno de sus ídolos desde los 15 años). El concierto de 3 horas de duración comienza con los dos músicos juntos en escena tocando 3 canciones y después se van intercalando los espacios de cada uno de ellos (del orden de 5-6 canciones), siempre que comienza o concluye un set entonan 1 o 2 canciones a dúo. El resultado es que Sting y Paul Simon llegan a cantar hasta 11 canciones juntos, 5 de Sting (“Brand new day”, “Fields of gold”, “Love is the seventh wave”, “Fragile” y “Every breath you take”), 5 de Simon (“Boy in the bubble”, “Mother and child reunion”, “The boxer”, “Late in the evening” y “Bridge over troubled water”) y 1 cover de los Everly Brothers (“When will I be loved”). En el Toyota Center de Houston se presentó en sociedad esta gira (que recordaba a la que hace años hicieron Elton John y Billy Joel) que incluía una magnífica selección de canciones (34 canciones diferentes), una veintena de excelentes músicos en escena en determinados momentos y dos cantantes de distintas generaciones (Sting tenía entonces 62 y Simon 72) y culturas musicales que demuestran públicamente una vieja amistad y un profundo respeto y admiración. Las mayores novedades de esta gira era la recuperación de temas como “Love is the seventh wave” (no interpretada desde el “Blue turtles tour” en 1986) o “They dance alone” (que únicamente se ha tocado en ocasiones muy señaladas desde que concluyó en 1988 el tour del álbum “Nothing like the sun”), y que Sting interpretara completamente a solas “America”, otro inmortal tema de Simon & Garfunkel.

ACTUACIÓN EN THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN, THE ED SULLIVAN THEATER, NUEVA YORK, NY (USA). (4/2/2014).

COMENTARIO:

Para conmemorar el 50 aniversario de la primera actuación de los Beatles en la televisión americana en el mítico “Show de Ed Sullivan” (que tuvo lugar el 9 de febrero de 1964 y que mantuvo a 75 millones de espectadores frente a sus televisores) el talk show de David Letterman contó con un especial musical que cada día de la semana rindió tributo a los Fab Four de Liverpool: Broken Bells cantaron “And I love her”, Sting y la joven Ivy Levan, que debutaba en la televisión, “Drive my car”, Lenny Kravitz “Get back”, The Flaming Lips con Sean Lennon “Strawberry fields forever” y por último Ms. Lauryn Hill cantó el tema más conocido de George Harrison, “Something”. Sting había conocido a Ivy en noviembre del año pasado en el Magicopolis de Santa Monica cuando participó en la presentación que su sello discográfico, Cherrytree Records, hizo de los artistas por los que más fuerte apuesta. Ahora unos meses más tarde Sting se encargaba de apadrinar a Ivy en la televisión americana ante millones de espectadores. Como curiosidad destacar que Mike Einziger, guitarrista del grupo “Incubus”, se encontraba entre los músicos de acompañamiento en esta estupenda versión del tema que abría el laudeado “Rubber soul” de los Beatles, el disco que manifestó su imparable madurez.
