"TO LOVE AND BE LOVED", EL AMOR TODO LO CURA, PARTE II

El amor es un tema importante y recurrente en el disco “44/876” de Sting & Shaggy. Ya hablamos en su día de otras canciones que lo evidencian desde su propio título como “If you can’t find love” o “Love changes everything”. “To love and be loved” es otro tema de corte romántico que no renuncia por ello a un marcado tono reggae y además es con toda seguridad el tema en el que más peso tiene la voz del jamaicano Shaggy, Sting se limita a cantar el largo y reiterativo estribillo. Compuesto por Sting, Shaggy, Rohan Rankine, Daudi Henderson y Sting International (o lo que es lo mismo Shaun Pizzonia) que se encarga de gran parte de la instrumentación de la canción (batería, guitarra y batería), le ayudan los habituales Martin Kierszenbaum, Dwayne Shippy y Machine Gun Funk. Lo más destacable de “To love and be loved” es la presencia del bajista Robbie Shakespeare, integrante del dúo jamaicano Sly & Robbie, que han producido o puesto sección rítmica a más de 200.000 canciones entre ellas de Bob Dylan, Grace Jones, Fugees, Gregory Isaacs, Ian Dury, Joe Cocker, Jimmy Cliff, Mick Jagger o Serge Gainsbourg. Sting colaboró codo con codo con Sly & Robbie en los temas “Another pyramid” (1999), para la BSO del musical “Aida” de Elton John & Tim Rice, y en “I need you like this hole in my head” (2000), para la BSO del documental rodado en IMAX “Dolphins”.

"16 FATHOMS", LA PROFECÍA DEL MARINERO

Otra de las perlas que únicamente se puede encontrar en la edición Deluxe del exitoso álbum de colaboración de Sting y Shaggy “44/876”, que a pesar de la inicial incredulidad dejó un grato sabor de boca y terminó conquistando el Grammy a la mejor producción reggae del año. Este tema en concreto parece fruto de una improvisación algo al margen del proyecto, grabado a caballo entre Los Ángeles y Nueva York, fue aportado por uno de los productores del disco Martin Kierszenbaum, que al más puro estilo Juan Palomo se encarga de la instrumentación al completo del sencillo pero efectivo tema (bajo, batería, marimba y percusión). Es de suponer que la única aportación de Sting y Shaggy, que figuran también como co-autores, sería la escritura de una letra poco trabajada en la que el ex-Police lleva la voz cantante y en la que Shaggy aporta unas breves estrofas que le sientan realmente bien. Un tema que gana con cada escucha y que por desgracia nunca ha sido tocado en directo en el tour 2018-19 de “44/876”. Merece bastante la pena redescubrirlo.

COMENTARIO:

En esta gala de los Global Citizen Prize, Sting fue galardonado al mejor artista del año por su trabajo durante los últimos 30 años en la Fundación Rainforest. Chris Martin (Coldplay) fue el encargado de entregarle el premio manifestando las 3 cosas que le gustan del premiado: su música es brillante, es sexy y protege la selva. En su discurso de aceptación Sting citó a la jovencísima activista sueca Greta Thunberg: “Cualquier cosa que hayamos hecho, cualquier cosa que hayamos logrado luchando, no hemos hecho lo suficiente”. También ofreció un breve set en el que cantó de modo acústico “Every breath you take” y “Fields of gold” y luego junto a la enigmática H.E.R. (como se conoce a la joven cantante de R&B Gabriella Wilson que con solo 22 años ya cuenta con 2 Grammy) interpretó otros dos de sus grandes hits, “Message in a bottle” y “If you love somebody set them free”.

COMENTARIO: 

Gala benéfica de la Fundación Rainforest de Sting & Trudie que tuvo su primera convocatoria en 1991 y hasta el año 2000 tuvo carácter anual, desde entonces se celebra cada 2 años, aunque la edición de 2018 fue cancelada y esta 19 edición ha tardado por vez primera tres años en celebrarse y también por primera vez se ha cambiado el marco donde celebrarlo, cambiando el tradicional Carnegie Hall por el Teatro Beacon de Nueva York. La gala fue presentada por el exitosísimo actor Robert Downey, Jr., quien además abrió la gala cantando junto a MJ Rodriguez una versión del “Addicted to love” del tristemente malogrado Robert Palmer.
Sting volvió a unirse al jamaicano Shaggy para cantar el tradicional “Englishman in New York”, más tarde ambos versionarían el “Electric Avenue” de Eddy Grant. Y como de música de los años 80 se centraba la velada, Sting se apropió del “Sledgehammer” de su buen amigo Peter Gabriel, quien desde Londres y a través de una videoconferencia excusó su ausencia en la gala benéfica, en la que por cierto no ha participado en ninguna de sus ediciones. “We’ll be together” fue el tema adelanto del segundo álbum como solista de Sting, en esta ocasión lo interpretó acompañado de la gran diva Lisa Fischer marcándose ambos un dueto colosal.
James Taylor puso su emotividad en temas como “Up on the roof” o “Never die young”, Bob Geldof cantó el mayor éxito de su carrera “I don’t like Mondays” e incluso se atrevió a versionar a Elvis Costello en “Understanding”, Debbie Harry cantó también uno de sus hits ochenteros junto a Blondie “Call me”, Ricky Martin desempolvó su “Livin’ la vida loca” y el hijo mayor de Sting, Joe Sumner osó versionar al mismísimo David Bowie en “Ashes to ashes”.
Faltaban por llegar los momentos más esperados: la colaboración de los dos grandes rockeros americanos John Mellencamp y Bruce Springsteen que cantaron juntos “Pink houses” y “Glory days”; y la reunión de Eurythmics (o lo que es lo mismo Annie Lennox y Dave Stewart) después de 6 años para hacer un mini set que culminó con joyas como “Here comes the rain again” y “Sweet dreams (are made of this)”. Después de un muy coreado “Dancing in the dark” del Boss, todos los participantes del evento se juntaron en el escenario para entonar el “Don’t stop believing” de Journey.

"2 IN A MILLION", STING & SHAED PONEN VOZ AL NUEVO TEMA DEL DJ STEVE OAKI

Es bien sabido el gusto que tiene Sting por sorprender, y a menudo desconcertar a su público, de otro modo no podrían entenderse colaboraciones como las que hizo con Krishna Das, Sugarbabes, Craig David, Black Eyed Peas, t.A.T.u, Nicole Scherzinger, Afrojack, Brian Johnson, Maître GIMS o Shaggy, tan alejadas, a priori, de su zona de confort. Lo cierto es que con Sting todo es posible y ahora se une a ese conjunto de colaboraciones tan bizarras una más, la que acaba de hacer con el DJ americano de ascendencia japonesa Steve Oaki y que acaba de presentarse en sociedad esta misma semana. El tema “2 in a million”, que estará incluido en el próximo trabajo de Oaki “Neon future IV”, cuenta además de la voz de Sting con la joven Chelsea Lee, la líder y vocalista de un ascendente grupo independiente de electro pop conocido como SHAED, quienes ni siquiera tienen aún álbum publicado (tan sólo cuentan con 4 EP’s desde que debutaran en 2011) y cuyo mayor éxito se titula “Trampoline”. Oaki ha dicho que Sting es una leyenda, que es fan suyo desde hacer largo tiempo y que ahora le parece surrealista contar con su voz en una canción compuesta por él. SHAED por su parte reconocen que crecieron escuchando a Sting y The Police y que son una gran influencia en su música. Sting consideró la oferta de Oaki, uno de los 10 DJ’s más importantes del mundo, muy interesante y no quiso perderse la oportunidad de estar allí. Su implicación ha sido tal que incluso en noviembre grabó el videoclip promocional de este tema que todo apunta a que sonará mucho los próximos meses.

"SILENT NIGHT (CHRISTMAS IS COMING)", STING & SHAGGY VUELVEN POR NAVIDAD

Para los que pensaban que la “pesadilla” de tener que ver juntos a Sting y Shaggy había quedado atrás estaban equivocados. Parece ser que esta impensable unión entre dos artistas de lo más dispares más que una jugada de marketing se trata de una verdadera amistad, de un respeto mutuo y de una necesidad de sorprender y experimentar. Le pese a quien le pese la jugada de “44/876” ha saldado números positivos, con un galardón como el Grammy al mejor álbum reggae del año incluido. Así que como nunca debe de descartarse una futura reunión del británico y del jamaicano, ese momento ya ha llegado de hecho aunque sea con la única excusa de lanzar un single (virtual) navideño. Sting y Shaggy han tomado el conocido villancico de origen austriaco “Silent night”, compuesto en 1816 por Franz Xaver Gruber (música) y Joseph Mohr (letra), y lo han reformulado al estilo reggae aprovechando para ello las bases y parte de la letra de “Morning is coming”, uno de los temas más conocidos de su disco en común “44/876”. Sting y Shaggy presentaron oficialmente el tema en Disney Wold, cantándola delante del mítico castillo para una gala grabada en exclusiva para celebrar el Día de Acción de Gracias. Parece que el lanzamiento de “Silent night (Christmas is coming)” será únicamente a través de portales de descarga. De cualquier manera un verdadero lujo que Sting y Shaggy se pongan de acuerdo para felicitarnos la Navidad de este 2019 por mucho que los planes de Sting para 2020 no parecen situarle cerca de Shaggy, para alivio de muchos.
