COMENTARIO:

Sting y Trudie organizaron en la escuela para sordos de Mill Neck un evento al que denominaron “Rhythm & Reds” en el cual donaron 4 variedades de sus vinos de la Toscana para acompañar los aperitivos que preparó el conocido restaurador de Long Island Tom Schaudel. Todo con el fin de recaudar fondos para dicha escuela. Sting también tocó para los presentes “Message in a bottle” con la ayuda del rapero Sean Forbes, que se quedó sordo a causa de una meningitis, y de algunos alumnos de la escuela, que tradujeron sus palabras al lenguaje de signos.

COMENTARIOS:

Despues de muchos meses de expectación se presentó en sociedad la gira en común de Sting y Peter Gabriel, quienes no compartían tour desde 1988 (la gira de Amnistía Internacional) y escenario desde 1991 (el concierto de los Kurdos).
El concierto alcanzó las 2 horas y 40 minutos de duración, las 13 canciones que eligió Peter Gabriel pertenecían a su etapa en solitario, estuvieron los incontestables y potentes hits (“Sledgehammer”, “Solsbury Hill”, “Big time”, “Red rain” y “Games without frontiers”), desarmantes baladas (“Secret world”, “Don’t give up” y “In your eyes”), canciones más oscuras (“The rythm of the heat”, “Darkness”, “No self control”), una versión de su partenaire de gira (“If you love somebody set them free” en clave blusera) y hasta un tema inédito (“Love can heal” dedicada a Jo Cox, la diputada británica recientemente asesinada). Sting por su parte fue más populista, arriesgó menos en su repertorio que consistió en otras 13 canciones, 7 de ellas de su etapa en Police (“Every breath you take”, “Message in a bottle”, “Every little thing she does is magic”, “Driven to tears”, “Roxanne”, “Invisible sun” y “Walking in your footsteps”), hits en solitario (“If I ever lose my faith in you”, “Desert rose” y “Englishman in New York”), una balada mítica (“Fragile”, dedicada a las víctimas de la matanza en el Club gay de Orlando), un tema no tan conocido aunque interpretado habitualmente en vivo (“Hounds of winter”), y por supuesto una versión de Gabriel (“Shock the monkey”). Otras sorpresas que depararon su repertorio fue cuando hizo una breve intro a “Message in a bottle” acompañado únicamente por el violinista Peter Tickell. Se trataba de un tema de Genesis, “Dancing with moonlit knight”, que curiosamente abría el álbum “Selling England by the pound” (1973). A “Walking in your footsteps” la enlazó con “Kiss that frog”, un conocido tema de Gabriel en solitario, del disco “Us” (1992).
Un Gabriel mucho más parlanchín asumió el rol de maestro de ceremonias y explicó al público que él creció entre vacas mientras que Sting lo hizo entre barcos; también tenía la certeza de que este tour les ayudaría mucho a aprender musical y humanemente del otro.
Sting definió esta gira con Gabriel como “una batalla de bandas”, los músicos de Sting llevaban algún detalle en azul y los de Gabriel en rojo. El concepto de esta gira era muy diferente al que Sting hizo recientemente con Paul Simon, allí sets de 5-6 canciones de cada intérprete se iban sucediendo y en cada cruce cantaban 1-2 canciones juntos. En cada concierto Sting y Simon podían interpretar hasta 10-11 canciones al unísono. Ahora las canciones de cada banda se iban sucediendo initerrumpidamente y aunque todos los músicos iban interactuando, Sting y Gabriel lo mismo compartían micro (lo hicieron en 6 ocasiones “No self control”, “Games without frontiers”, “Solsbury Hill”, “Englishman in New York”, “Every breath you take” y “Sledgehammer”, que fue el broche final), que adoptaban un papel completamente secundario en el set del otro, Gabriel se limitaba a tocar su teclado y Sting su bajo o hacer únicamente coros. En cualquier caso este concierto de apertura con un lleno absoluto dejó muy buenas sensaciones y esperemos que en los próximos 20 conciertos haya aún más sorpresas.

En la semana del 13 de junio las bandas de Sting y Peter Gabriel se reunieron en los Avatar Studios de Nueva York para ensayar por primera vez todos juntos. Se confirma finalmente la banda que acompañará a Sting en este tour, y es tal cual imaginábamos:

5 días antes de la presentación oficial de la gira "Rock Paper Scissors", las bandas de Sting y Peter Gabriel se encuentran ya en Columbus, Ohio, para ensayar en el Nationwire Arena.

Dominic Miller se anima a hacer de portavoz de su banda, siguiendo el ejemplo del bajista Tony Levin y reconoce sentir que va a participar en algo histórico, que probablemente sea la cima de su carrera. Y como no todo va a ser trabajar, también hay tiempo para el relax, podemos ver a Sting y a Dominic jugando al Ping Pong.

                                        

Se prueba el juego de luces del sofisticado escenario en el que llegarán a juntarse hasta 14 músicos tocando al unísono.

Y casi sin darnos cuenta, es 21 de junio... ¡¡¡llegó el día!!!.
