COMENTARIO: 

Sting ha confesado en repetidas ocasiones que el largo proceso de gestación de su primer musical “The last ship” ha sido la etapa más excitante de su vida. Todo empezó en 2011 cuando Sting llevaba 8 años sin poder escribir ni una sola canción, ese bloqueo compositivo lo llenó con sus discos esotéricos sobre John Dowland, sobre el invierno o sobre sus canciones con arreglos orquestales. En septiembre de 2013 aparecería el álbum con las canciones interpretadas por Sting con la ayuda de Jimmy Nail, Jo Lawry, las hermanas Becky y Rachel Unthank e incluso Brian Johnson (AC/DC), y justo un año después llegó a Broadway. El recibimiento no fue el esperado para una producción tan costosa y en diciembre de 2014 Sting dio el relevo a Jimmy Nail con el personaje de Jackie White para tratar de salvar los muebles. Los esfuerzos fueron inútiles, Sting tenía una gira programada junto a Paul Simon y tenía que abandonar el montaje y los productores a finales de enero decidieron cancelar el espectáculo que había anunciado fechas hasta al menos finales de mayo. 

Sting no se desanimó y en 2018 reflotó el proyecto para hacer con él una gira británica, escocesa e irlandesa de 112 representaciones por Newcastle, Liverpool, Birmingham, Northampton, Leeds, Nottingham, Cardiff, Dublín, Edimburgo, Glasgow, York y Salford. El éxito hizo que Sting se animara a volver al montaje como intérprete y ya en 2019 interrumpió sus constantes giras para pasarse casi dos meses en Toronto representando “The last ship”. 

Este año su involucración es aún mayor porque Sting con la mayor parte del elenco de los dos últimos montajes de “The last ship” harán una gira americana de 112 representaciones que les llevará por Los Ángeles, San Francisco, Washington, St. Paul y Detroit. 

Sting ha vuelto una vez más a reestructurar el show para hacerlo más apetecible para el público. En el horizonte los rumores de que “El último barco” de Sting zarpe hasta Londres en 2021.

COMENTARIO:

El mismo día que debutaba con su musical “The last ship” en Los Ángeles, en donde daría hasta el 16 de febrero 40 representaciones, Sting concedió una entrevista al conocido presentador Ryan Seacrest. En la entrevista Sting dijo que el largo proceso de “The last ship” había sido el momento más apasionante de su vida. También dijo sentirse orgulloso de la influencia que haya podido él ejercer en el último hit del rapero Arizona Zervas, “Roxanne”. Se anunció que el single de The Police “Every breath you take” iba a ser inducido al Grammy Hall of Fame formando a pasar parte de las 1.114 grabaciones que lo integran.

COMENTARIO: 

Después de hacerlo en 2014, 2015 y 2019, Sting volvía a ponerse en la piel de Jackie White, personaje secundario pero fundamental en la trama del musical “The last ship”, que el cantante compuso con algunos tintes autobiográficos y con la idea de que fuera interpretado por su buen amigo Jimmy Nail. El musical no fue todo lo bien recibido que se esperaba en Broadway y Sting tuvo que saltar a escena para tratar de que no se hundiera su personal “barco”. Al final “The last ship” se fue a pique en 4 meses escasos. Sting ha venido recuperando su querido proyecto esporádicamente y ahora en 2020 le dedicaría más de 4 meses y más de 100 representaciones. Un día antes de su debut en Los Ángeles, Sting y la actriz Frances McNamee, que viene interpretando a Meg Dawson desde 2018, interpretaron una intimista versión de la delicada “August winds”.
