STING PRESENTA SU NUEVO SINGLE Y ANTICIPA LA PORTADA Y LOS TEMAS DE "57TH & 9TH"

Ayer se estrenó en todas las emisoras del mundo el nuevo single de Sting, "I can't stop thinking about you", un tema con cierto aíre a su etapa en Police, muy enérgico y comercial, ya se me ha metido en la cabeza. Se publicará el día 2 de septiembre de manera virtual y físicamente en algún país aislado  como Alemania. El tema ya resuena en mi cabeza y solo lo he escuchado 3 veces.

Hoy se ha dado a conocer la portada del nuevo álbum de Sting, "57th & 9th", su vuelta al rock después de 13 años. Será el noveno que cuente con material propio. Estos son sus 10 temas:

COMENTARIO:

Sting participó en este programa radiofónico matutino y grabó una mini actuación ante un reducido número de invitados que fue emitida en directo. Aprovechó además para presentar su nuevo single, “I can’t stop thinking about you”, el mismo día además que era lanzada en todas las radios del mundo. Además del enérgico single que recupera en cierto modo el espíritu de Police, y que de forma irónica habla del propio bloqueo compositivo que sufrió Sting, es una canción sobre tratar de escribir una canción y encontrarse con un folio en blanco. El tema fue inmediatamente elogiado por algunos críticos, y también sorprendió la excelente versión que se hizo de “All this time”. El grupo “The Last Bandoleros” que representa el manager de Sting, Martin Kierszenbaum, hicieron coros durante toda la actuación y Jerry Fuentes además aportó su mandolina a “All this time” y lo cierto es que le sentaba de maravilla.

COMO LA MUERTE DE DAVID BOWIE Y EL CAMBIO CLIMÁTICO INSPIRARON EL NUEVO LP DE STING

No hay laudes aquí. Este otoño Sting, de 64 años, regresa con su primer álbum de pop-rock en más de una década. “57th & 9th”, llamado así por la intersección por la que pasaba diariamente en su camino al estudio, fue grabado a la velocidad de la luz por el icono en tan solo 4 meses – y se alimentó, como él cuenta, por las muertes de amigos como David Bowie o Prince, el cambio climático, y sus paseos por Manhattan.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Tú grabaste este álbum en menos de 4 meses. ¿Te sentiste especialmente inspirado?

Sting: Mi manager dijo: “Tienes que escribir esas canciones en un cierto tiempo, y tienen que ser grabadas en cierta fecha…”. Y yo disfruté de ello. Hay una libertad espontanea y un elemento divertido en base a ello. Yo creo que se puede escuchar en el álbum.

EW: En la canción “50,000,” cantas sobre la muerte de estrellas del rock.

S: David Bowie fue el primero, y después Lemmy [Kilmister de Motörhead], y después mi amigo Alan Rickman, y después Prince. Todo eso nos derribaba más y más. Era un momento extraño porque tú piensas que esa gente es inmortal, pero de repente ellos, igual que el resto de nosotros, mueren. Eso me intrigaba ese gran éxito en esa brillante luz, pero también cada brillante luz crea una oscura sombra. Creo que la sabiduría solo viene cuando has navegado por ambas. Me estoy poniendo filosófico (risas), es porque estoy en Elsinore (Dinamarca).

EW: Otro tema importante es el cambio climático, y en “One fine day” tú hablas sobre los escépticos del calentamiento global.

S: Yo rezo porque los escépticos del cambio climático tengan razón (risas). Me encantaría que los científicos estuvieran equivocados. Pero creo que está sucediendo. Esta es mi opinión irónica sobre todo ese asunto.

EW: El nombre del álbum, “57th & 9th”, es el nombre de la intersección por la que pasabas en Nueva York todos los días para llegar al estudio. ¿Por qué se te ocurrió que debería ser el título?.

S: La mayoría de mis pensamientos vienen cuando me muevo y es una ciudad muy inspiradora en la que estar. Los peatones, el tráfico, el ruido, la arquitectura – la escala de Nueva York es muy estimulante para la mente. Los paseos son parte muy importante del proceso.

EW: ¿Dónde más buscaste inspiración?.

S: Leí mucho, ví películas, leí los periódicos. Me preocupo de lo que pasa en el mundo. Si te sientas en casa, sentirás ansiedad y esa ansiedad será un especie de motor para ti. Te hace pensar: “Okay, ¿qué es lo que voy a hacer?”. El primer single [ “I can’t stop thinking about you”, que se publicará el 2 de septiembre] se trata de mirar una hoja de papel en blanco y ver lo que parece un campo de nieve sin ninguna pista de lo que hay debajo.

EW: Siempre que regresas al rock, los fans trazan comparaciones con tu trabajo con Police. ¿Te molesta eso?.

S: Fue una muy exitosa banda de rock. Nunca voy a sentir otra cosa más que orgullo por ello.

EW: ¿Qué te motiva a seguir creando después de tantas décadas?.

S: Tan solo el divertirme. Nunca me reconozco que estoy grabando un disco. Voy caminando al trabajo cada día, y si he disfrutado al final del día, es que ha sido un día provechoso.

COMENTARIO:

Todos los veranos Sting organiza en su villa de La Toscana algún evento especial en el que reúne a sus amigos y en el que aprovecha para promocionar sus vinos, “Sister Moon” ya cuenta con cierto prestigio al ser elegido como uno de los 100 mejores vinos de toda Italia y también como el mejor vino elaborado por un famoso. Hace dos años celebró sus 22 años de casado allí, con Nek cantando para los presentes “Panis Angelicus”, y el pasado año tocando él mismo para sus invitados.

En esta ocasión volvió a hacer un mini recital acústico en el que tocó sus temas más inmortales. En esta ocasión estuviron presentes, entre otros, el filántropo Bobby Sager y su buen amigo, el cantante Bob Geldof. Con ellos estuvo esa mañana visitando la Galería de la Academia de Florencia.

TODAS LAS PISTAS SOBRE EL NUEVO DISCO DE STING (3ª parte)

El 13 de julio Martin Kierszenbaum vuelve a colgar otra instantánea de la grabación del nuevo álbum de Sting. En ella se le puede ver trabajando un acorde junto a Jerry Fuentes, el guitarrista y vocalista principal de The Last Bandoleros. Curiosamente su ex-compañero en Police, Stewart Copeland, está grabando por primera vez un álbum de estudio de un viejo proyecto junto a Vittorio Cosma, Gizmo, qué también cuenta con Adrian Belew (King Crimson) y Mark King (Level 42).

El día 19 de julio a través de un artículo de la revista Rolling Stone conocemos el título del nuevo álbum, "57th & 9th", el nombre se debe al cruce de calles que Sting tuvo que atravesar diariamente para acudir al estudio de grabación. Se trata, según dicen, de su vuelta al rock después de 13 años y de su trabajo más vigoroso desde "Synchronicity" de Police. Se trata de un disco muy improvisado, Sting acudió al estudio sin ningún tema preparado y allí fueron naciendo. Además el álbum vuelve a tratar temas comprometidos, Sting habla en "Inshallah" de los refugiados sirios, en "One fine day" del cambio climático, y en "50.000" de la consternación ante la muerte de una icono del rock, tema inspirado por el súbito fallecimiento de Prince.

Un brevísimo video promocional publicado el 21 de julio en su página oficial nos adelanta el sonido que tendrá el álbum, y lo que es aún más importante, la fecha definitiva de lanzamiento: 11 de noviembre.

 

El 25 de julio se presenta el cartel del iHeart Radio Music Festival de Las Vegas para este año. U2 cerrará el concierto del día 23 de septiembre y Sting hará lo propio el día 24. Será uno de las primeras ocasiones en que se pueda escuchar, tal vez, alguna de sus nuevas composiciones.

                                                 

El 26 de julio conocemos el título del que será el primer single del álbum "57th & 9th", "I can't stop thinking about you", empezará a sonar por las emisoras de radio a partir del 2 de septiembre. Quienes han podido oírlo dicen que es muy rockera y que su melodía te atrapa con facilidad.

Ese mismo día también conocemos el aspecto que tendrá una caja de vinilos llamada "The studio collection" y que se publicará el próximo 30 de septiembre. Incluye 8 de sus discos de estudio (no se incluyen los de su periodo llamémosle "clásico" (2006-10): "Songs from the labyrith", "If on a winter´s night..." y "Symphonicities") a un precio que rondará los 140 euros. Cabe destacar que se trata de la primera vez que se editan en vinilo "Brand new day" y "Sacred love".

A finales de julio murió Nigel Gray, el que fuera productor de los 3 primeros álbumes de Police, tan sólo Andy Summers da públicamente sus condolencias. El 3 de agosto Sting habla en un breve video de su primer álbum en directo "The dream of the blue turtles" (1985): "No creo que hiciéramos un disco de jazz. Era un disco pop con sensibilidad jazz".

El 9 de agosto, justo cuando concluía una exitosa gira europea de Sting de 9 fechas, se nos informa de que en "57th & 9th" también estarán otros viejos conocidos. El guitarrista Lyle Workman y el batería Josh Freese. Ambos giraron con Sting durante la "Broken Music Tour" aunque en diferentes tramos, Josh estuvo en la gira americana y Lyle en la europea.

Un día después conocemos a otros colaboradores, se trata de una joven banda nacida en Berlín llamada Fattouch Band, llena de variadas influencias debido a la multinacionalidad de sus integrantes: el libanés Hazzem Nasreddine (Qanun), la rumana Marioanne Makkaroni (Violín), el sirio Salam Alhassan (Percusión), el francés Jean Baptiste (Guitarra y voz) y la alemana Razan Nasredin (Voz). Grabaron con Sting, Dominic y Rhani en las mismas sesiones berlinesas en las que se grabó al laudísta iraquí Thabet Azzawi, y de la que dimos cuenta en el anterior reportaje de esta serie.

El día 13 de agosto aparece el video explicativo correspondiente al segundo álbum de estudio de Sting, "...Nothing like the sun" (1987): "Fue intenso cantar con las madres de desaparecidos. Una inolvidable parte de mi vida".

El 15 de agosto aparece la primera imagen promocional del nuevo disco con un Sting muy rejuvenecido. Ese mismo día se anuncia su participación el 31 de agosto en el programa radiofónico Kevin & Bean's Breakfast. Allí, en los estudios KROQ de Los Angeles ofrecerá un mini concierto ante solo 300 personas y presentará su nuevo single, "I can't stop thinking about you".

El 16 de agosto aparece el video sobre su tercer álbum en solitario, "The soul cages" (1991), aún hoy mi favorito, con el que comenzó mi devoción por Sting: "Volví a mis raíces buscando inspiración. Es una elegía a una forma de vida y a mi padre".

Un día más tarde y gracias a LiSting (siempre he pensado y he dicho que se trata de la mejor página sobre Sting a nivel internacional, una continua fuente de información. La página oficial está por desgracia a años luz de ésta) descubrimos a más colaboradores: Nadim Sarrouh (Oud), Accad AlSaed (Percusión) y Nabil Alchami (Clarinete), y más títulos de canciones: "The pretty young soldier", "Petrol head" y "Heading South on the great North road".
