Sting ha escrito el prólogo del nuevo libro del pintor británico Bill Jacklin centrado en la ciudad de Nueva York. El martes 24 en una librería de Broadway a las 6 de la tarde, Jacklin y Sting presentaron el libro “Bill Jacklin’s New York” con Alexander Gilkes de moderador. Hubo también la tradicional firma de ejemplares y un interludio musical que no pudo ser más apropiado, Sting cantó acompañado de su buen amigo Chris Botti el célebre tema “Englishman in New York”.

Sting participó en esta convención ecologista que celebraba los 50 años que Riverkeeper ha luchado por mantener limpias las aguas del Río Hudson. A orillas del mismo se celebro este evento que reunió a otras personalidades tan comprometidas como Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, James Cromwell, John McEnroe, Fisher Stevens, Rufus Wainwright, Robert DeNiro o Debbie Harry. Sting hizo un breve set acompañado por varios de sus músicos de confianza.

COMENTARIO:

Esta antigua y gran comunidad musical, en su tercera gala de primavera, premiaron a Sting por su faceta filantrópica y a Brenda Harris, por impartir clases allí durante 22 años. El evento tuvo lugar en el Capitale de Nueva York, Sting que se encuentra en estos momentos grabando allí su nuevo disco, acudió para recoger su galardón y fotografiarse con los futuros jóvenes músicos. Durante el transcurso de la cena, Sting tuvo la cortesía de regalar a los presentes dos de sus clásicos acompañado por su inseparable guitarra y por el pianista y productor Rob Mathes. Mientras tanto su mujer Trudie se encontraba en la 69 edición del Festival de Cannes para apoyar la presentación de “American honey”, la nueva película de Andrea Arnold, que ella produce y que protagonizan la debutante Sasha Lane y el problemático Shia LaBeouf.

COMENTARIO:

Pearl Jam se encontraba haciendo una gira de sus grandes éxitos por Norteamérica y Canadá. Unos días antes, en Philadelphia, habían tocado por completo su primer álbum “Ten” (1992). En sus dos conciertos en el Madison Square Garden se centraron en lo mejor de su amplio repertorio, en el segundo concierto en concreto (el del 2 de mayo) sobrepasaron la treintena de temas, entre ellos versiones de los Beatles, los Who, Wayne Cochran, Dead Boys, Cheap Trick y The Police.

Rick Nielsen y Tom Petersson, el vocalista y el bajista de Cheap Trick, aparecieron durante el cover que Pearl Jam hizo de “Surrender”. Recien iniciada la segunda tanda de bises ocurrió algo muy parecido, después de que Eddie Vedder hubiera cantado la primera estrofa de “Driven to tears”, apareció por sorpresa Sting y se encargó de terminarla. Igual que vino se fue porque antes de que la banda de Seattle terminara el combativo tema que él compuso en 1980, Sting ya se había despedido del público y había desaparecido del escenario.

“Driven to tears” es un tema que ha adoptado Pearl Jam casi como propio y que fue parte importante en sus giras de 2003 y 2009.

COMENTARIO:

Un día después de tocar en la Casa Blanca, Sting apoyaba una de las apuestas fuertes de su manager y hombre de confianza, Martin Kierszenbaum. Acompañó al joven grupo de música Tex-Mex, “The Last Bandoleros” (dos de sus miembros son hijos del cantante texano Emilio Navaira) en dos temas, “Where do you go?”, el single más exitoso de la banda, y “Next to you”, el primer tema con el que se abría el primer álbum de The Police, hace casi 40 años. Es posible que este concierto pudiera haberse grabado con la idea de un próximo lanzamiento videográfico.

COMENTARIO:

El Presidente Barack Obama y su mujer Michelle cedieron la Casa Blanca para que se celebrara allí la 5ª edición del Día Internacional del Jazz. Esta celebración comenzó a llevarse a cabo en 2012 (con sede en Nueva Orleans, París y Nueva York), al año siguiente fue en Estambul (Turquía), en 2014 en Osaka (Japón) y en 2015 nuevamente en París (Francia). Las actuaciones fueron benéficas a beneficio de la UNESCO. El especial se grabó el día 29 en un pequeño pabellón que se encuentra en el jardín de la Casa Blanca y fue emitido por TV un día después, el 30 de abril.

El actor Morgan Freeman fue el encargado de presentar la gala y Herbie Hancock, embajador de buena voluntad de UNESCO, fue al igual que en otras ediciones el hilo conductor entre el númeroso grupo de virtuosos músicos que pasaron por el escenario a lo largo de hora y media. La mítica Aretha Franklin sería la encargada de abrir la gala cantando “A song for you”, bellísimo tema que compuso el pianista Leon Russell. Kurt Elling y Dee Dee Bridgewater cantaron a dúo “St. James infirmary”, mientras que los cubanos Chucho Valdés y Paquito D’Rivera recuperaron un tema del padre del primero, Bebo Valdés, “Con poco coco”. El pianista Chick Corea y el trompetista Terence Blanchard llevaron “Straight up and down” a cotas celestiales, más tarde John McLaughlin rememoraría al mismísimo Miles Davis con “Spanish key”. Pat Metheny, por su parte acompañó con su habitual elegancia a Diana Reeves en “Minuano”. Otro momento inolvidable lo protagonizaría el saxofonista Wayne Shorter acompañando a Joey Alexander, un virtuoso pianista de tan solo 12 años, en el tema “Footsprints”. Sting fue el encargado de presentar con total admiración al trompetista sudafricano Hugh Masakela, con una carrera a su espalda de más de 6 décadas, que lideró el tema “Bring him back home (Nelson Mandela)” y por último ver a uno de los mejores guitarristas de la historia, Buddy Guy que roza los 90 años, tocando “Meet me in Chicago” dejó boquiabiertos a los presentes.

La actuación de Sting la presentó su compatriota Helen Mirren, el tema elegido fue de clara influencia jazzística, “Sister Moon”, que compuso para su segundo álbum como solista “…Nothing like the sun” (1987), y que fue incluso versionado por el mismísimo Herbie Hancock. Hizo una interpretación magistral acompañado por Hancock, Pat Metheny y Marcus Miller, entre otros.

Como punto final todos los cantantes participantes a tal especial evento entonaron una versión conjunta del “Imagine” de John Lennon.

COMENTARIO:

Sting reclutó a su banda al completo para dar uno de esos conciertos privados que tan acostumbrado nos tiene en los últimos tiempo y que tanto nos indigna, un músico de su categoría no debería ofrecerse con tanta frecuencia al mejor postor. En esta ocasión era Honda Masters quien se hacía cargo del caché del cantante y el conocido Restaurante neoyorquino Rainbow Room, que fue propiedad de la familia Cipriani, el lugar elegido para festejar el evento. Sting y su banda tocaron durante una hora sus grandes éxitos, entre ellos, como pudimos ser testigos a través de Instagram, “Desert rose”.
