COMENTARIO:

A dos días de iniciar las 6 semanas de representaciones en Toronto de su musical “The last ship”, en el que vuelve a encargarse del papel de Jackie White, Sting se encontraba hacienda promoción por los medios. En el programa CBC Music fue entrevistado y coincidió en el plató con el siguiente invitado, el productor y pianista David Foster que iba a iniciar una gira de conciertos por Canadá. Ambos ante los pocos y afortunados presentes improvisaron un estupendo cover de “My funny Valentine”. En la entrevista previa Sting había reconocido que no tenía ningún tipo de motivación por protagonizar el musical “The last ship”, tan solo quería escribirlo y producirlo. Fue un productor de Broadway quien le dijo que necesitaban vender más entradas y por lo tanto la presencia de una estrella ayudaría a ello.

EL DISCO "44/876" DE STING & SHAGGY GANA EL GRAMMY AL MEJOR ÁLBUM DE REGGAE DEL AÑO

El 11 de febrero se celebró en el Staples Center de Los Ángeles la 61 edición de los Grammy en la que se entregaron los premios más importantes de la música y que tuvo entre a sus galardonados a Sting & Shaggy por "44/876", que se llevaron el Grammy al mejor álbum del año de reggae desbancando a Black Uhuru, Etana, Protoje y Ziggy Marley. 

El encargado de recogerlo fue Shaggy, los compromisos laborales de Sting con el musical "The last ship" en Toronto no le permitieron estar presente. Era el segundo Grammy que lograba Shaggy y el decimoséptimo de Sting, que desde 2004 no recibía uno.

"22nd STREET", AMOR INMORTAL

Se trata de uno de los 5 temas del álbum “44/876” que no ha sido interpretado nunca en vivo. Es además sin duda alguna uno de los más románticos del mismo: un irracional amor que no desaparece a pesar de los años. Un tema vocalmente muy compensado entre Shaggy y un Sting que hace una portentosa interpretación además de tocar el bajo. De la parte instrumental se encargan el guitarrista Andy Bassford y el batería Karl Wright, ambos han dado consistencia a la banda de jazz-reggae del pianista Monty Alexander y se han hecho célebres gracias a ello. Reseñables también los teclados de Machine Gun Funk y la inestimable presencia de Dominic Miller y Martin Kierszenbaum (por parte de Sting) y de iLL Wayno y Sting International (por parte de Shaggy). Es sorprendente la variedad y solidez que se consiguió en “44/876” cuando se contó con un plan de grabación muy precipitado y acelerado: se empezó a grabar en enero de 2018 y con la fecha de publicación ya decidida, finales de abril.

COMENTARIO:

En la ciudad suiza de Davos se reúnen cada año desde 1991 los principales líderes empresariales y políticos internacionales para analizar los problemas más acuciantes para la salud y el medio ambiente, es el denominado “Foro de Davos”. Este año contó además con una actuación privada de Sting que se celebró en el Cabanna Club, situado a un kilómetro escaso del Centro de Congresos de la ciudad. Sting estaba en medio de los ensayos para “The last ship”, pero se había ausentado el fin de semana del 19 y 20 de enero para grabar un videoclip con Shaggy en Barcelona. Aprovechando su estancia en Europa reunió a la banda al completo para tocar un exclusivísimo concierto dentro de las jornadas del conocido Foro donde tocó grandes hits como “Roxanne”, “Message in a bottle”, “Every breath you take”, “Every little thing she does is magic” o “Walking on the moon”.

DREAMING IN THE U.S.A., GOLPE AL SUEÑO AMERICANO

Es muy probable que de los 16 temas que conocemos en los que Sting y Shaggy han grabado como inesperado tándem este sea en el que más ha aportado Sting y del que más satisfecho y confiado se ha sentido, puesto que ha sido el único en el que se ha reservado funciones de producción junto a su mano derecha Martin Kierszenbaum, quien además vuelve a hacer alardes como multiinstrumentista (aporta guitarra, teclados y percusión al tema en cuestión). El sueño americano del que hablan Sting y Shaggy comienza siendo muy ingenuo e infantil para tornarse en las últimas estrofas en mezquino e irreal. Un tema que ha sido imprescindible en el Tour “44/876” y que en su mensaje aparte del carácter crítico no le falta el optimismo tan marcado en este trabajo que ha cruzado los caminos del inglés y del jamaicano. El guitarrista Dominic Miller también participa aquí como co-autor y el saxofonista Branford Marsalis colorea el tema con más reminiscencias Motown de todo el disco. A pesar de su enorme potencial extrañamente no fue elegido como single y temas como “Don’t make me wait”, “Morning is coming”, “44/876”, “Waiting for the break of day”, “Just one lifetime” o “Gonna get back my baby” se le adelantarían en tener ese honor. Si “Waiting for the break of day” se acercaba a la vertiente más jazzística de Sting, “Dreaming in the U.S.A” es el tema que más se asemeja a su vertiente más rockera.

COMENTARIO:

Sting ofreció su última actuación del año en un especial de Nochevieja para la Fox en el cual fue junto a Christina Aguilera y Snoop Dogg uno de los platos fuertes del mismo. Para tal ocasión Sting recuperó un tema que hace 19 años acogió el cambio de milenio con total optimismo, “Brand new day”, muy bien acompañado a la armónica por Shane Shager, al que conoció en verano en Mix Beach House y por tres coristas de sobra conocidos por él, especialmente la australiana Jo Lawry, colaboradora suya desde los tiempos de “If on a winter’s night…” (2009). Se prometía una nueva versión pero en realidad se trataba de una remezcla del DJ norteamericano Dave Audé que ha colaborado con Sting puntualmente desde 2003. Al parecer una de las ideas de Sting para 2019 era reformular algunas de sus más populares canciones para lanzar un álbum con ellas. A los pocos días se le podía ya ver inmerso en un estudio de grabación en Los Angeles.
